1. More than half of the world’s population lives inside this circle.
This map is really surprising. That circle encompasses China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, Burma, Thailand, South Korea, Nepal, Malaysia, North Korea, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia and Bhutan.
2. The British have invaded almost every country in the world.
In the book “All the countries we’ve ever invaded”, British HistorianStuart Laycock writes that “Out of 193 countries that are currently UN member states, [The British] invaded or fought conflicts in the territory of 171. That’s not far off a massive, Jaw-dropping 90 percent.”
3. Left and right driving countries
This world map shows which side of the road traffic drives on. Green coloured countries drive on the right, orange countries drive on the left.
4. Africa is much bigger than you think
Most maps you see are based on the “Mercator Projection”. The Mercator projection is excellent for sailing but it’s terrible for estimating the size of large masses of land – particularly when they are close to poles. That’s the reason Africa looks to be about the same size as Greenland but actually it’s 14 times larger.
5. The Best and the worst countries to be born into.
A study done by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The firm looked at 80 countries , scoring them across 11 variables to determine which country will provide the best opportunity for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in the years ahead. The result mapped out below, are both surprising and not.
6. Only three countries in the world don’t use the metric system – Liberia, Myanmar and United States.
As Vox’s Susannah Locke wrote, “the measuring system that United States uses right now is not really a system at all. It’s a hodgepodge of various units that often seem to have no logical relationship to one another.” Rest of the world except these three countries using this system, 10 mm in 1 cm, 100 cm in 1 m, 1000 m in 1 Km. Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C.
7. Map of world wealth.
This is a map of world weighted not by land mass or navigation lines but around how much wealth each country has. North America and Western Europe balloon shows the richness. The horror of this map is the shrunken husk of Africa.
8. Suicide rates in the world according to WHO.
According to the World Health Organization, Guyana has the highest suicide rate in the world, with 44 suicides per 100,000 people. Darkest coloured countries have the highest suicide rate.
